Join us for a thought-provoking and insightful webinar as we delve into the critical intersection of mental health and incarceration. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we will explore the continued need for reform as well as the work of advocates that has already been taken to prioritize treatment and rehabilitation over incarceration, with a particular focus on the transformative policies of State Question 780 and State Question 781. During this webinar, we will bring together a panel of experts, advocates, and policymakers who are at the forefront of mental health reform and criminal justice advocacy. Through engaging discussions and shared experiences, we will shed light on the challenges faced by individuals with mental health conditions within the criminal justice system and highlight the positive changes that can be achieved when treatment becomes the priority.
Community Conversation: Breaking the Cycle – Mental Health and Incarceration
Oklahomans deserve a pretrial system that supports families. Our state currently has one of the highest pretrial incarceration rates in the country. This means that a significant number of legally innocent people are being held in jail prior to ever having a trial. Pretrial detention can last at times up to a year. This leads to costly overcrowding, a drain on our state. It also results in individuals' lives being upended – often losing their jobs, homes and breaking apart their families – all before being found guilty of any offense. Moreover, the use of cash bail in Oklahoma is unconstitutional and disproportionately impacts low income families who cannot afford to pay for their release. The inability to pay is shown not only to disrupt family cohesion but also to have a negative impact on the outcome of the defendant’s case. Individuals held in pretrial detention are more likely to receive a conviction, harsher sentencing, and less likely to be referred to a diversionary or treatment program. From pretrial risk assessment to cash bail and prolonged detention our pretrial system needs to be reformed. Keeping Families Together: Pretrial Justice
Oklahoma was the first state and first jurisdiction in the world to adopt lethal injection as its method of execution. In fact, it is one of the remaining 27 states that still utilizes the practice. Oklahoma’s track record with capital punishment has been characterized by botched executions, racial discrimination and wrongful death sentences of vulnerable populations. It’s time for Oklahoma to reevaluate its relationship with capital punishment. Tune into the next community conversation as we learn about the process and business of death in Oklahoma, lessons learned from the Julius Jones case, and proposed policies to secure a more humane and just system.

Incarceration rates for women have increased 800% across the nation. In #Oklahoma alone, the number of women locked away in prisons has increased more than 17-fold, from 176 in 1978 to 3,114 in 2017. We continue to lead the nation in female incarceration, only second to Idaho, and this devastating phenomenon has caught the attention of the world. <br />Join us in a private screening of the film Women in Prison: America's Forgotten Voices by French film studio StudioFact Rights documenting the mass incarceration of women in Oklahoma. <br />Afterwards we will be joined by Kris Steele, the Executive Director of TEEM, Colleen McCarty, the Executive Director of Oklahoma Appleseed Center for Law and Justice, and Tondalao Hall, an advocate for reform and formerly incarcerated individual.
